When Carianne Marshall joined SONGS Music Publishing as Partner and Head of Creative Licensing in 2006, she was the company’s third employee and the first on the West Coast. Previously, Carianne held positions at Elektra Records, Universal Music Publishing and DreamWorks, after getting her start at a Los Angeles - based company, VOX Productions. She rose through the ranks rapidly and by 2006, Carianne was a veteran in the highly volatile major label music industry. She was ready for a change and in a leap of faith joined Matt Pincus and Ron Perry to form the third side of the SONGS triangle.
Carianne oversees SONGS’ creative licensing team responsible for placing compositions by SONGS’ writers in film, television, commercials, video games, and in all other visual media. Different from most people in the music industry, Carianne doesn’t see creative licensing as a sales job. SONGS focuses on the relationships between the SONGS team, music supervisors and songwriters.
SONGS is now a powerhouse licensing machine generating placements with brands, acclaimed television shows and films. Recent partnerships include BMW, Diet Coke, and General Electric, as well as television shows including HBO’s Girls and Vice, Nashville, Shameless and films like The Hunger Games, Boyhood, and Twilight: Breaking Dawn.
Along the way, Carianne has become one of the most respected creative licensing professionals in the business and has grown into the company’s executive leader on the West Coast. SONGS has been able to attract some of the industry’s biggest hit makers and acclaimed songwriters such as Lorde, Diplo, DJ Mustard, Q-Tip, Sleigh Bells, Marsha Ambrosius, Jose Gonzalez, and many more.
Carianne, now an eight year veteran at SONGS, has found a home in which she plans to stay. The potential at SONGS is limitless and Carianne considers it a privilege to have her dream job at a company built around empowering songwriters.
